It's Saturday Night and the Sermon Isn't Done

It is late on Saturday. The sermon is not finished. Sunday is not going to wait.

If you have been in ministry longer than a year, you know this feeling in your chest. A funeral moved. A kid got sick. The elder meeting ran three hours. The week did what weeks do, and now you are staring at a half-built message with the clock against you. First thing, and hear this: you are not a fraud. You are a person with a finite number of hours and a hospital visit that mattered more than another commentary.

Now let us salvage the sermon.

Cut your scope in half

The mistake at 10pm is trying to preach everything you found on Tuesday. You cannot. So stop trying.

Pick one passage and one point. A short text preached with clarity beats a long one preached in a panic. Nobody has ever walked to their car wishing the sermon had covered more ground. Narrow it, and breathe.

Preach the passage, not a topic

When time is short, the pull is to grab a topic you already know cold and staple three verses to it. Do not drift there. It always sounds thin, and the congregation can feel the difference.

Stay in the text in front of you. Read it slowly, five times through. Ask what it says, what it asks, and what it promises. This passage has been doing its work for centuries. You do not have to be brilliant tonight. You have to be clear, and clear is faster than brilliant.

Write the first line and the last line first

Two sentences. The one that opens, the one that closes. Get those, and the middle finally has somewhere to go.

Most of the panic is really the fear of a blank page and an open ending. Pin down the start and the finish, and the sermon stops feeling like a void and starts feeling like a bridge you only have to build the middle of.

Then go to bed

A rested preacher reading a clear message beats an exhausted one delivering a brilliant one he wrote until 2am. Your presence in the room on Sunday is part of the sermon. Do not burn all of it tonight.
